AFLAK INC. · EST. VANCOUVER · OCTOBER 2024
A Canadian media
institution, by
design.
Aflak Inc. was founded in Vancouver in October 2024 to build narrative infrastructures that empower diverse voices for excellence and growth. What started as a studio is now three divisions, nine operators, and six cities of operating footprint.
A Note From Our Founder
I started this because I kept watching the same thing happen. A community would do something extraordinary — build something, gather for something, survive something together — and then hand the story of it to whoever was cheapest and available. The work would come back competent and forgettable. A folder of assets. A receipt. And the thing that actually happened would slowly become indistinguishable from a thousand other things that didn't.
That gap — between what an organization actually is and what the world ends up seeing of it — is what Aflak exists to close.
I didn't come to this as a businessman looking for a market. I came to it as someone from these communities, watching them get treated, again and again, as a niche rather than a subject worthy of the same craft the industry saves for its biggest clients. A mosque fundraiser deserved the same seriousness as a product launch. A grassroots organizer's story deserved the same lens as a Fortune 500 campaign. I couldn't find a studio that believed that in practice, so we became one.
Aflak means orbits. Not because it sounded good, but because it's how I actually think about the work — different divisions, different scales of client, different formats, all moving around one shared center of gravity. That center is intention. The discipline of never leaving to chance what a message is going to do once it leaves our hands.
We built the studio around four words that are older than the company and, I hope, will outlast it. Itqan — excellence, the refusal to stop before something has actually arrived, not just been finished. Adab — the etiquette of a story, the insistence that every person in front of our camera is treated as fully human, never as raw material. Tawazun — the balance between craft and truth, so the work is polished without losing what made it real. Takaful — the belief that none of this happens alone, that a studio, like a community, rises or falls together.
None of this is complicated. It's also not easy, which is why most of the industry doesn't practice it. It's slower to ask a client the questions they haven't been asked before their story deserves. It's slower to sit with an organization for weeks before a single camera comes out. It's slower to come back three months after delivery and ask what actually landed. We do it anyway, because a story that isn't understood before it's told isn't really being told at all.
What I want Aflak to be known for isn't a look or a lens or a production value. I want it known for a posture — the belief that a small community group with a story that's never been documented deserves the same attention as anyone with a bigger budget. That belief is the whole company. Everything else is just how we practice it.
We're still practicing it. Every project is another attempt to get it right.
